Alternativ DGDI appointed by Compose System to distribute Star Proof in France

Alternativ enter French market with new localized version, integrated Harlequin RIP, new BitScreen option and support for latest hi-res Epson printers

Dartford, Kent, UK – July 4th 2005 – Compose System today announced the appointment of Paris-based Alternativ DGDI as distributor of Compose Star Proof across France. First released in 2001, the Star Proof dot-for-dot ROOM proofing solution is now installed at thousands of companies in the print and publishing industry world-wide including over 100 systems sold during the last three years to customers in France. The announcement is timed to coincide with the new version 4.1 of Star Proof – available in French, German and Spanish versions and designed to increase the appeal of the product to a wider range of markets.

"Star Proof is an amazing product and the new version is going to give a tremendous boost to sales. We are delighted to be partnering with Compose at this exciting time in their market development and look forward to meeting distributors from Europe at Compose’s Star Proof Seminar later this month" said Jose Peral, Product Manager, Alternativ DGDI.

"Alternativ provide an excellent fit with our plans for Star Proof. Their expertise in digital proofing and experience of the Pre-press, print and publishing market in France is second to none and will contribute greatly to marketing and support of Star Proof in France. I look forward to a long and mutually beneficial partnership” commented Steve Donegan, Compose Systems’ Manager of European Sales.

About Star Proof

Developed for Mac OS X by an experienced team of colour professionals, Star Proof is a ROOM proofing application which uses unique techniques to recreate the actual dot patterns and rosettes of original separations at ink-jet printer resolutions. The hard dots of the proofs allow exceptionally faithful reproduction of the high resolution images including defects such as moiré patterns and text reproduction as small as 1pt . Tuned to take advantage of Epson VSDT-capable printers, Star Proof produces remarkable results with contract quality proofs up to 200lpi being output on printers running at just 1440 lpi by 720 lpi.

New in Version 4.1

• Harlequin RIP
A new, fully integrated Harlequin RIP option which provides pre press or printing houses the facility to RIP files to 1-bit TIFF with the CTP or imagesetter calibration curve applied. These files are then processed for high quality screened proofs via Star Proof and following approval, the original 1-bit TIFF files can be used to output to film or plate via any Tiff downloader. This new feature also allows design shops, advertising agencies and in-house design departments the ability to produce high quality screened proofs on in-house printers.

• New Epson Printers
Support for the new high resolution capabilities of the latest range of Epson ink-jet printers – namely the StylusPro 4400-7400-9400 and 4800-7800-9800 – is also immediately available and will provide even more attractive price/performance levels for screened proofing. Resolutions of 1440 x 1440 and 2880 x 2880 are fully supported for the best quality screened proofs.

• BitScreen
BitScreen allows the same high quality screened proofing from files in proprietary formats such as CMYK TIFF, CT+LW, Heidelberg Delta and TIFF-IT. The Esko Graphics LEN file format is also supported. Users have the option to determine output settings such as preferred screen ruling and dot angle.

Also in Star Proof 4: The recently released version 4 of Star Proof provides new features for packaging applications with special calibrations and distortions for flexo printing to ensure that proofs accurately reflect what will be produced on the press. The new dot management features handle dot distortions, lost dots and the extremely high dot gain of up to 15% to 20% of flexo printing. The new version also includes ICS2 – a new colour management engine offering automated fingerprinting and colour matching using automated analysis of colour strips with the X-Rite DTP-41 or Gretag Eye one Spectrophotometers.
